Island Commons, the adult family care hope operated by Chebeague Care Resource, will celebrate its fifth anniversary next month with a wine-tasting party on June 21, the summer solstice, and is planning other fundraising activities. Nonprofit groups assisting the elderly can have difficulty bridging the gap between actual cost and reimbursements, and Island Commons is always looking for ways to supplement its resources.

On Fridays, local women have been coming to play bridge and have lunch at the Commons. Sometimes they stay for Bingo.

Soon to be re-named Island Commons Resource Center, Island Commons’s organizers hope the facility will become the place that Chebeague senior citizens can call home, either on a daily basis or a permanent one.

In five years the Commons has become one of the largest employers on the island, with a dedicated and caring staff. A volunteer group who is also ready to help out whenever needed. Some volunteer on a regular basis, and others are on call when the need arises. Island Commons has a “homey” atmosphere. For example, breakfast is available whenever the resident rises – just like home. The kitchen is often the meeting place of the Commons, where one can often find residents sitting and talking during the day as island friends and relatives come in and go. Families are encouraged to visit and participate.

In 1996, Chebeague Care Resource was encouraged to pursue development of an adult family care home on Chebeague. A suitable home on 1.9 acres was donated, and Chebeague Care Resource raised over $200,000 locally to renovate and add to the home. It received additional support from the U.S. Department of Agriculture, Community Develop Block Grants, the Maine State Housing Authority, Coastal Enterprises, Inc., the Island Institute, the Town of Cumberland and five family foundations.
