To the Editor:
In his July 2003 [letter] “Right Spokesperson?”, Mr. Parker reveals he is uninformed and out of touch with the issues and concerns shared by many Chebeague Island residents, one of which is property assessments and related taxes. Despite his connections with the island, Mr. Parker apparently has little knowledge of Mr. Hill’s participation and involvement over the past year with taxation issues here on the east coast, both local and statewide, as proponent and spokesperson for the Maine Land Bank Program. It seems Mr. Parker interprets Mr. Hill’s statements regarding reasons for certain aspects of the Land Bank as statements made on behalf of the Chebeague Island community. They are not and Mr. Hill has never claimed them to be. Indeed, Mr. Hill is far too wise to believe he or any other person could speak for the Chebeague community with its abundant number of folks who can and do speak for themselves on any number of issues. Additionally, Mr. Parker’s sharing his opinion, aimed not at a particular issue but focusing instead entirely on a specific individual, would have been far more appropriately delivered in a personal poison pen letter rather than on the pages of this publication. Working Waterfront should have trashed the letter upon receipt and should rethink its position on publishing such “editorials” that have no content. What was WW’s purpose for publishing this?
