To the editor:
I am a member of a group called “Fairplay for Harpswell.” We are in the midst of fighting a multi-billion-dollar energy company who proposes to build an LNG/natural gas port here.
I want to commend you on your article “The Long View: Open Letter to Governor Baldacci” (WWF Dec-Jan 2003-04.) I think that that says it all. I am as against Sears Island as much as Harpswell. Do we really need to be the Gulf of Mexico? I have spoken to Access Northeast Energy as well as Irving Oil. Both of these companies are going to have the capacity to supply Maine’s natural gas needs. In fact there is a LNG feeding frenzy going on and natural gas will be here whether Harpswell or Sears Island comes on board. Call these competitors; they are very informative. Everyone is hesitant to endorse us but endorsements are needed now otherwise we will exchange less than 50 jobs at an energy company for many more than 100 fishing jobs. WHAT DO WE WANT FOR MAINE? Once we open the door to these energy companies it is all over.
Please join us in repelling a multi billion dollar fossil fuel company.
