When Islesboro residents set out to create an island community center back in 2000, they were thinking in terms of a building, and in fact, two years later, they were given a site to work with. When that didn’t work out, the community center committee did what looks like the right thing: they regrouped and began developing a community center “without walls” consisting of programs for teens and others. To date, they’ve opened a youth center in a borrowed building, and they continue to plan events of various kinds. In short the committee is creating a “center” for the community, and for the time being at least they’re doing it without a building. The walls may come in time, but for now the committee is making do – all in the best traditions of self-sufficient communities.
