The following is part of the “Managing Nature” headlining article of the August WWF. The following statistics are provided to enhance the article on seabird restoration efforts, and are as listed below:
3500 — Maine islands (dry at high tide).
151 — Nationally significant seabird, wading bird, or Bald Eagle islands in Maine lacking permanent protection. The majority are bald eagle islands; 53 are seabird islands or have a history of being a colony.
87 — Number of nationally significant Maine islands thatthe U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service is looking to permanently protect.
11 — Number of Maine islands currently managed for seabird restoration.
6 — Number of islands that the USFWS wants to add to the 11.
4 — Number of islands hosting a puffin colony.
2 — Percentage of Eider ducklings that survive predation without protection.
0 — The chance a tern or puffin would survive without management of predators and human disturbance.
