Hatcheries as a Model

Your article on Alaskan salmon [WWF Sept. 04] should have also mentioned the role of Alaskan salmon hatcheries in the successful management of Alaskan salmon fisheries. The success of fishermen’s cooperatives in the operation and management of the hatchery systems is a remarkable success based both upon their production capacities and the contribution of hatcheries to the salmon fishery. It could serve as mechanism if not a model to address the many salmon issues in Maine.
