Over 300 lobsters were cooked and served at the July 17 memorial lobster picnic at Islesford, in honor of Warren Fernald. For a number of years Warren had spoken of wanting to use the benefits from his Veteran’s life insurance policy to treat all of his island friends to a lobster. After his death on June 14, the family made plans to honor his wishes on his birthday. The road in front of the Fernalds’ house was temporarily closed to accommodate over 20 tables made of plywood set on lobster traps. The tables represented an extension of the Fernald dinner table where Warren and Anna had welcomed so many people to join them over the years. The lobster feast was fine example of Warren’s generosity and a way for the family to thank people who were so supportive during Warren’s illness. Several friends asked him why he didn’t want to hold the party before he died. His response, “Well, I really don’t care much for a crowd.”
