Maine voters did the right thing last month by supporting two initiatives to make the state’s coast more affordable and accessible. Passage of Question 7, the constitutional amendment that will allow properties used in connection with the fishing industry to be taxed at their current use, is a huge step in the right direction. Like any such tax break it will have costs – as has been pointed out, when one kind of taxpayer gets a break, others have to take up the slack – but these costs should be regarded as a sensible investment in Maine’s future.
Passage of Question 5, the bond issue that will provide funds for a start, at least, in protecting working waterfronts from unsuitable development, was also a healthy development for Maine. The dollar amount should have been much larger, but it can be in the future if this investment shows positive results.
Overall, the vote demonstrates that with determination and a willingness to explain things clearly – over and over again, if need be – good ideas can prevail.
