Damariscotta artist Franciska Needham will display a collection of works with American and marine accents at the Maine Maritime Academy, Castine, from Aug. 17 through Oct. 19, 2006. A reception for the artist will be held from 5 to 7 p.m. Aug. 17.
The exhibition, at the academy’s Bath Iron Works building, will include seascape paintings of the Maine coast in oil and acrylic paint; a series of pastel drawings of Schoodic Point; three-dimensional constructions of the American flag, one made up of computer parts and another of medical supplies; as well as constructions that incorporate international marine code signal flags and sailors’ knots.
“I enjoy working in all mediums,” she said. “I really don’t have a favorite.”
Needham owned and operated a gallery of contemporary art in Damariscotta for 23 years and has exhibited her work in other Maine galleries and museums, and in Delaware, Pennsylvania, and New York.
Having the exhibition at the Maine Maritime Academy holds particular significance for the artist, whose late husband, Martin Needham, graduated from the school.
