David M. Stainton of Cranberry Isles, community leader and the owner of Cranberry Island Boatyard, whose design for his Western Way 19 delighted many, died July 31. He was 72. He served as a selectman for the Town of Cranberry Isles and as president of The Futures Group, an organization he helped found almost a decade ago. An architect and avid skier, he and his wife, Barbara, bought the boatyard in 1985. In 1990 they moved into a house David had designed and built. In addition to his wife, he is survived by their daughter, Lilo, and her family.
A celebration of David Stainton’s life is planned for Aug. 26 on Cranberry Island, where a flotilla will proceed from the Great Cranberry Island Town Dock to the pool. Ted Hoskins, a minister and classmate of David’s at Mount Hermon School, will conduct a committal service in front of the Cranberry Island Boatyard. Those not in boats can watch from the shore and dock by the boathouse.
