Three Swan’s Island organizations joined forces Aug. 12 to raise money and create entertainment. The Swan’s Island Educational Society (library), the Lighthouse Committee and the Hockamock Players provided islanders with dinner and a play. The First Annual Chowder Cook-off was held early in the evening as a joint fundraiser for the library and lighthouse. Fourteen chowders were entered, and a fifteenth was provided as an extra treat by the library. The Lighthouse Committee had several paintings by Eric Chetwynd, Sr., up for a silent auction that raised additional funds.
Several businesses and individuals donated fish, vegetables, biscuits and pickles for the chowder contest.
Donna Wiegle, serving a fish chowder, took away first prize, a trophy and an autographed cookbook. In second and third place were Jeffrey Ellison and Jamie Matthews, respectively.
Folks were then treated to a night of laughs courtesy of the Hockamock Players. The theatrical group performed a comedic mystery, “Murder is a Game.” The play drew a large audience, capping a fun-filled community evening.
