To the editor:
I read of the passing of Mr. David Merriman Stainton, whom I had met in Williston, Vt. in the late 1970’s. He was on the Town Planning Board and I was with a development company seeking to build a large retail complex. The very extensive and protractile debate became very emotional and at times quite personal as the proposed project went thru the regulatory process. David, however, although we knew he would prefer that this project not be built, always treated us with respect and true professionalism, while representing his office with the Town.
I have read about him in Maine Boats and Harbors over the years but have not stopped to see him during many summer sailing visits to Maine. This is my loss.
