Gary Libby, founding member of the Midcoast Fishermen’s Association from Port Clyde, met with fishermen from seven communities from Stonington to Eastport over the weekend of April 19th. The meetings were designed to allow Libby to listen to fishermen’s concerns and gain a deeper understanding of the issues affecting Downeast fisheries.
Gary Libby is Gov. John Baldacci’s top choice for appointment to the state’s at-large seat on the New England Fisheries Management Council (NEFMC).
Libby was eager to expand his knowledge of issues affecting fishermen. “Because I am more familiar with the fishermen from midcoast and southern Maine it is extremely important that I become more informed about the interests of Downeast fishermen, and to assure them that I am truly committed to representing them” he said.
Fishermen from all the communities visited were very pleased that he was willing to take the time to meet with them and were appreciative to have an update on the council process, as well as the initiatives that groups such as the Midcoast Fishermen Association are undertaking.
