As a summer resident on an island surrounded by lobster buoys and a witness to the lights of the lobstermen already at work before dawn, I have been grateful over these recent years for the Working Waterfront’s articles about the lobster industry, and Sandra Dinsmore’s articles in particular.
Her experience and interviews have revealed many facets of lobstermen’s lives and concerns. Your September issue had perhaps the most significant revelations, in the article about the Winter Harbor Lobster cooperative. Who knew Maine lobsters were considered poorer quality than those from Canada? Who knew of efforts underway to hold hard shell lobsters for higher prices? I hope Working Waterfront and Ms. Dinsmore will keep us updated on the continuing changes in this vital Maine industry.
